Family History:
Founded in 1932 by Giorgio Gambetti, a well known local Black Hand enforcer, the Gambetti family was the second Cosa Nostra ever formed in Liberty City after the Forelli family was formed in 1925. The family started out as a crew of Sicilian immigrants in Broker, robbing local trucks and selling their goods to warehouses in order to make a profit. Some members of the family were involved in gambling & prostitution rackets based throughout the borough while others preferred to extort local businesses. Prior to 1940, the family was a small-time organization making chump change until Don Gambetti made a friend in politics, Mayor Michael Thomson. He did this by making sure his associates would beat up on anyone who didn't vote for Thompson in his mayoral campaign. Thomson saw to it that the LCPD steered clear of the Gambettis' neighborhoods and cracked down on their cross-town rivals, the Forellis. This gave the family a chance to expand their operations into Algonquin & Dukes. With City Hall now on their side, the Gambetti family's wealth & influence grew over the years. Although other families like the Ancelottis, the Leones & the Messinas began springing up, the Gambettis maintained their power. However, after Giorgio Gambetti died in 1955 of natural causes, his Consigliere, Sonny Cangelosi, became the new Don. Under Cangelosi's leadership, the Gambettis united with the Pavano, Ancelotti, Messina & Lupisella families in 1959 to form what became known as, "The Commission". From that point on, the Commission ran Liberty City's underworld with an iron fist. After a new mayor, Jason Alexander, was elected in 1965, he vowed to rid the city of crime forever. Mayor Alexander began cracking down on the Gambettis and brought indictments against more than fifteen members of the family. City Hall was now giving the Gambettis a hard time, until the family had put a contract out on the mayor in 1967. After the mayor was assassinated, things once again began going smoothly for the Commission. When Cangelosi was murdered in 1978, his nephew, Jon Gravelli, took control of the family. It is suspected that the Forelli family was behind the hit, although this was never proven. With Gravelli as the new Don, the Gambettis soon rose to power and became the most powerful of the five families within a few months. This gave them a larger percentage of the Commission's weekly income. For the next 40 years, the Gambettis would flourish and expand their businesses to other cities like Carcer City, Vice City, & Alderney. But by 2008, the Lupisellas, the Pavanos & the Ancelottis all broke away from the Commission and waged an all-out war against the Gambettis in a jealous lust for power. Jon Gravelli died from illness at age 85. Giorgio Gambetti's great grandson, Paulie Gambetti, assumed control of the Gambetti family and began expanding to San Fierro. War soon also broke out between the family and the Russian Mafia after the Russians killed Don Gambetti's Consigliere, Roy Zito, because Zito had owed the Russians some money and refused to pay. Upon the release of his second-cousin/Caporegime, Jackie Gambetti, the Don has put Jackie in charge of all family operations out in San Fierro.
